Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Race History

Added to the card in 2008, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is the biggest race in North America for 2-year-old fillies. Run over a mile, it became a grade two race in 2010, and by 2012 was a grade one race.

Unlike the Juvenile Turf, for which six of the 10 editions have fallen to European horses, the Juvenile Fillies Turf has been the preserve of North American-trained fillies, with seven of the nine runnings won by fillies trained in North America. It’s been particularly good to Chad Brown, who’s trained the winner on four occasions, with his most recent win coming in 2017.

A number of the winners went on to have distinguished careers. The winner of the 2009 edition, Tapitsfly, was forced to miss her 3-year-old season through injury and was below her best at four, but returned at five to win two more grade one races. The 2011 winner Stephanie’s Kitten became an outstanding horse, winning five grade one races in total, including the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Lady Eli, the 2014 victor, has won 10 of her 13 starts to date, including five grade one races.

The European winners were distinguished fillies, however. The 2012 winner Flotilla went on to win the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas), and the 2013 winner Chriselliam was the champion 2-year-old filly of Europe, having previously won the Fillies Mile (G1) at Newmarket; she was tragically euthanized two months after her Breeders’ Cup victory due to an infection.
