Roulette History

Roulette is one of the most popular games at a casino for very good reason. The word roulette is the literal French translation of “little wheel” and was invetd by Francois Blanc.

The roulette table has a wheel at the head, and then a play table with several numbers in sequential order along with a few areas outside this grid which offer more betting options.

There are essentially two different types of wheels:
A single-zero wheel features numbers from 0-thru-36 in a specific order.
A double-zero wheel will also have the numbers 0-thru-36 in order but also include a “00” between 1 and 27. This changes the odds slightly in the houses favor.

Roulette offers two types of bets that are more generally categorized as inside or outside bets. The outside bets include “50-50” bets that are usually listed as black/red, odd/even of low/high (numbers 1-18 are low, 19-36 are high). The outside bets have even odds.

Players usually prefer the payouts of the inside bets. While the biggest reward is a straight bet on a single number, you can also hedge your bets with splits (two adjacent numbers, streets (three numbers in a horizontal row) or squares (four numbers that all share a corner). There are more advanced versions of these bets.

A straight bet on any single number, including the zero, offers a return of 36/1. Splitting reduces these odds to 36/2. Streets are valued at roughly 12/1, while rows offer an 8/1 return. Like exotic bets in horse racing, the more potential outcomes that you rope together, the lower your payout.

The house edge in roulette depends on the type of bet made.
