Three Top-10 teams had a bye week, so there was little chance we would see four Top-10 teams lose for the second straight week, or five Top-15 teams stumble like we witnessed two weeks ago. But Purdue made sure another upset was in order on Oct. 21, as the Boilermakers beat the No. 2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 49-20. Purdue was a 13-point underdog and handed Ohio State its first loss of the season, sending the Buckeyes bailing out of the Top-10 in NCAAF Week 9 rankings.

The college football AP and Coaches polls had two teams move up into the Top-5, as both LSU and Michigan beat ranked teams while showing its defensive strength. LSU beat Mississippi State 19-3 and Michigan stopped the Spartans of Michigan State, 21-7. In total, six top-25 teams lost in Week 8, and these are reflected in the NCAAF Week 9 rankings where the October shakedown continued.

Top AP Top-10 looks like this heading into Week 9 of the college football season.

No. 1 Alabama (8-0) – beat Tennessee 58-21 No. 2 Clemson (7-0) – beats NC State 41-7 No. 3 Notre Dame (7-0) – bye No. 4 LSU (7-1) – beat Mississippi State 19-3 No. 5  Michigan (7-1) – beat Michigan State 21-7 No. 6 Texas (6-1) – bye No. 7 Georgia (6-1) – bye No. 8 Oklahoma (6-1) – beat TCU 52-27 No. 9 Florida (6-1) - bye No. 10 UCF (7-0) – beat East Carolina 37-10

Ohio State (7-1), Kentucky (6-1), West Virginia (5-1), Washington State (6-1)and Washington (6-2) are the next five, and Washington State made the biggest move in the polls this week after beating Oregon 34-20. The Cougars jumped 11 spots to No. 14 and are now the only 1-loss team in the Pac-12.

The top-20 is completed by Texas A&M (5-2), Penn State (5-2), Iowa (6-1), Oregon (5-2) and Wisconsin (5-2).

The top-25 also includes South Florida (7-0), North Carolina State (5-1), Utah (5-2), Stanford (5-2) and Appalachian State (5-1), the latter of which makes a surprise appearance in NCAAF Week 9 rankings.

Cincinnati (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion, losing a late 17-10 lead as Temple tied the game and won it in overtime 24-17, leaving Bearcat betting backers (+3.5) baffled.

Week 9 ranked team match-ups include:

#18 Iowa Hawks at #17 Penn State Nittany Lions (-5) #9 Florida Gators vs #7 Georgia Bulldogs (-7) in Jacksonville #14 Washington State Cougars at #24 Stanford Cardinal (-3.5)
