The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to New York for the Go Bowling at The Glen on Sunday. The Watkins Glen International road course has produced some exciting racing over the years. With only a handful of races left before the playoffs, teams will be pulling out every strategic possibility to pull out a win.
Only six drivers in the field hold a win at Watkins Glen—Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliot and Martin Truex Jr.—and Busch is the only driver with multiple wins (two). Busch comes into this race, like many races, as the favorite (+250). Truex is not far behind at +300. Neither appears to be a vulnerable favorite, but it’s difficult to lay such low odds. Busch, in 14 races, only has two wins at Watkins Glen. Truex has only one win in 13 races there. They will be tough but are beatable.
Hamlin and his team has been on fire as of late. In the last six Cup races, Hamlin has racked up four top-five finishes and a win. In his last six road-course races, he has three top-five finishes.
But even though his average finish at Watkins Glen is 17.31, I like his team’s performance over the last few races, and you can’t beat getting him +1000. His team will play for the win with a playoff spot already locked up. Joe Gibbs Racing should be strong this weekend, and if Hamlin qualifies well, he should be the play Sunday.
How about a longshot to play with Hamlin? Look no further than Hamlin’s teammate, Erik Jones, at +2000. In two races at Watkins Glen, Jones has finished fifth and 10th, and he has been knocking on the door this season. In his last six races, he has three top-five finishes, and has an average finish of 7.67. With his team still on the playoff bubble, it could take a strategic risk to finish well. If Jones can qualify well and sit close all race long, he can sneak his way into victory lane and lock himself into the playoffs.
Sunday will be all about the Cup Series, but you can also find betting opportunities on Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race on BetAmerica!
