In a 16-game season, each game counts as much as the next. But in the NFL, Week 1 is tremendously important for setting the tone of the season for the players, their fans and gamblers.
An entire offseason worth of hype, hope and preparation can get thrown completely out the window if the offensive line looks like trash in the opening week. With Week 1 creeping up on us, let’s take a look at a couple teams that look best prepared to guarantee themselves a positive and momentum-building start to the 2019 season.
The Philadelphia Eagles get their franchise quarterback back and longtime veteran Desean Jackson will also return to the fold. They’ve also brought in former Bears running back Jordan Howard to beef up offensive firepower. This is a team that finds itself in a weak division and only two years removed from a Super Bowl win. With returning leaders on defense and a roster full of proven winners, the Eagles are the clear favorite in the NFC East. To begin that campaign they will face the Washington Redskins, a team that most expect will struggle in 2019. While it’s encouraging to hear quarterback Alex Smith is progressing from last year’s injury, his absence leaves the Redskins with a major question mark at the most important position on the field. Winning on the road in-division is tough as it gets. This feels like a game that will set the tone for 2019.
Another team that looks ready to start the year with a win is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who take on the San Francisco 49ers. The Bucs should look different this year with Bruce Arians calling the shots. Recent reports from assistant coaches claim Jameis Winston has learned the new offense quickly and looks good. I also love the Devin White draft pick. He is a leader, an ultimate competitor and should pair with Lavonte David incredibly well. They both have the speed to help the secondary in coverage and that should prove useful against tight end George Kittle. I don’t expect San Francisco to go on the road in Week 1 and win, either, so this looks like a good spot for the new coaching staff to get things rolling in Tampa in a positive way.
