Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.

Thursday, June 18

Churchill Downs, Race 6: Allowance (1 mile on turf, 3:42 p.m. ET)

Calumet Farm homebred #1 Flap Jack (6-1 on the morning line) showed promise last summer, when he finished second in a 1-mile maiden race over the Arlington Park grass course (ahead of future stakes winner Pixelate), then romped to a four-length score in the Arlington-Washington Futurity on Polytrack.

Flap Jack hasn’t been as sharp against stakes company on dirt this season, though he did unleash an eye-catching middle move in the Gotham (G3) before he weakened to finish sixth.

He has trained strongly at Keeneland, where he blazed a bullet half-mile in :47 1/5 June 13, and a drop in class and return to turf could reawaken this talented but inconsistent runner.

Let’s bet Flap Jack to win and key him in the exacta:

$8 to win on #1 Flap Jack
$1 exacta: 1 with 2,7,8,10 ($4)
$2 exacta: 2,7,8,10 with 1 ($8)
Total: $20

Good luck!
