Fillies Showing the Way in 2017 Futurities

Handicapping the futurities can be a challenge, as many of the runners are just beginning their racing careers and don't have extensive past performance information. Every now and then, there is one standout who lives up to post-time favoritism, but chances are you will be able to find a price horse to edge out the fastest qualifier.

So far in 2017, the fillies are beating the boys in futurity finals, and many are rewarding handicappers with some nice mutuel payouts!

Blue Eyed Fance was the upset winner in the Mardi Gras Futurity on March 18

Several finals have already been run this year and there have been a few favorites to prevail as well as a couple of nice price horses.  At Louisiana Downs, Blue Eyed Fance upset the field in the $273,000 Mardi Gras Futurity on March 18 with a nice win payout of $33.40.

Together To The End, a daughter of Inseperable, was the second-fastest qualifier but won  the $233,578 Harrah's Entertainment Futurity (G3) at Louisiana Downs by a neck last month. She was sent off at 9-2.

Both Louisiana Downs futurity winners were trained by Jose Sanchez, who will saddle two runners Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park in the $483,000 Sam Houston Futurity: Kas Tempting, the 5-2 favorite and Lj Fastest Time, who is 8-1 on the morning line.

La Vencedora won the rich Remington Park Futurity and paid $20 for the win

La Vencedora, a daughter of Ivory James won the $932,500 Remington Park Futurity (RG2) on April 22. She was the fastest qualifier on the second day of the trials; the fourth-fastest overall and rewarded her supporters with a $20 win ticket.

Fastest qualifier Ima China Rush was sent to post as the 17-10 choice in a field of nine juveniles, and the  Rushago filly responded with her first stakes win in the $525,050 Oklahoma Futurity (G3) at Remington Park. She paid $5.40 for the win.

With Ruidoso Downs getting underway in May, there are plenty more big races for 2-year-olds. Get to know the top juvenile sires, as that knowledge will pay big dividends in handicapping these races.
