History of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes
Inaugurated in 1935 as a race for 3-year-olds and up as the Santa Catalina Handicap, the race changed to a contest for 3-year-olds only in 1964 and was renamed the Santa Catalina Stakes. In 2007 it became the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, named after the co-owner of Timber Country, Serena’s Song, Silver Charm, and Charismatic.
The race has been a good guide to the Kentucky Derby over the years, and thus was given a place in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series. The first four finishers all earn points on the series table, on a 10-4-2-1 basis.
Over the years some notable horses have won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. The 1973 edition was won by Sham, who was unfortunate enough to run into Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, finishing second both times. Ferdinand won the race in 1986 on his way to winning the Kentucky Derby, while the 2012 Derby winner I’ll Have Another scored his first graded stakes win in this race. Other winners include Derby placegetters Mane Minister, Pioneerof The Nile, and Dortmund.
