A Brief History of the Haskell Invitational

The Haskell Invitational (previously known as the Haskell Invitational Stakes) is a Grade I race run every year at Monmouth Park. Inaugurated in 1968, the race was named for the former President and Chairman of Monmouth Park, Amory L. Haskell. A well-liked and well-respected figure in horse racing on the East Coast, Haskell oversaw the construction of Monmouth Park in 1946 and continued run the facility until his passing in 1966. Along with the race, Haskell’s namesake is attached to the Haskell Invitational Trophy, a prestigious and highly sought trophy presented to the winner.

As it stands the Haskell Invitational acts as a prominent contest between the Triple Crown and the Breeder’s Cup. In fact, on top of the already hefty million-dollar purse, owners and trainers of the entries will receive a $25,000 bonus for each Triple Crown race victory they bring to the race. The trainers of race winner without a Triple Crown race win can walk away with an extra ten thousand dollars if they have a Grade I race victory under their belts.

Past winners of the Haskell Invitational include Wajima (1975 winner and Three-Year-Old Champion), Forty Niner (1988 winner and Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Famer), and Point Given (2001 winner and Hall of Famer).
