Racing in the Australian cities of Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth are currently in a temporary hiatus, while a high-profile jockey awaits results of a coronavirus test.

The jockey wasn’t displaying any symptoms, but it was revealed during Wednesday’s races that the hoop was on a flight with a passenger who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Because the jockey rides in multiple states, and out of an abundance of care, racing was immediately abandoned mid-meeting at Warwick Farm and Sandown, while Ascot was called off.

There’s hope that, if the test returns a negative, racing will resume in these cities Friday, just in time for the big Saturday meeting (Friday night U.S. time) at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens, which includes the Tancred (G1).

Australian racing continues tonight at Narromine, in country New South Wales. Narromine is only a small town of around 4,000, but it shares some important history with the United States. During World War II, it served as a location for an inland aircraft fuel depot, which stored and supplied fuel for both the Royal Australian Air Force and U.S. forces.

There’s eight races on tonight’s card, with the first scheduled for 10.50 p.m. ET. Here’s a couple that should run well.

Race 1: #1 Mudgegonga

This lightly raced 4-year-old mare hasn’t found the winning post in 10 starts, but she has certainly been banging on the door.

In her latest effort, over the same 1-mile trip she will contest tonight, Mudgegonga finished her race off strongly to grab second, behind an above-average gelding called Royal Monarch. Four runs back she was again the bridesmaid, in a race that has since produced multiple winners. That was also over the same 1-mile trip, which seems to be her favorite distance.

Jockey Michael Heagney — who is 53-years-old, thank you very much — maintains the ride and will be able to use his experience to overcome a tricky gate. At 6-1 on the morning line, she’ll be tough to beat.

Race 3: #1 Attuned

Nothing went right last start, when Attuned was caught three and four wide the entire trip, yet he still held his ground well for a solid fourth after an on-pace run. He is drawn perfectly and maps well for another solid run on the pace tonight, and the additional two furlongs should suit him.

Attuned also picks up the services of leading country hoop Mathew Cahill, and at 11-2 on the morning line, represents great value to get the job done.
