Ruidoso Downs Done -Off to Albuquerque!
The Ruidoso Downs live racing season ended with an awe-inspiring victory by Jess Good Candy in the $3 million All American Futurity on Labor Day. However, New Mexico racing fans have another meet to follow. The Downs at Albuquerque kicks off their fall season on Friday, September 11.
Approximately $1.2 million in stakes purses will be up for grabs during the 17-day meet with six for Quarter Horses and five for Thoroughbreds. The 440-yard, $200,000 Downs Fall Quarter Horse Championship is the top Quarter Horse feature, and is likely to attract a very strong field. The winner of this race will earn a berth in the 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1), one of the major AQHA
stakes, which will be run December 27 at Sunland Park Racetrack in southern New Mexico.
Last year's trainer leaders were Ron Stephens, Wes Giles, and Adam Tapia and Jose Luis Enriquez led all Quarter Horse riders with 16 wins from 102 mounts, four more than Esgar Ramirez, who rode 12 winners from 67 mounts.
The Downs also attracted 2014 All American Futurity runner-up, Mad About The Moon, who made his season debut with a 1 1/2-length win in the 350-yard, $55,000 Conquistador Stakes for 3-year-olds on May 31.
First post time for The Downs’ live races will be 1:30 p.m. (MDT) on weekends, and 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
