History of Horse Racing at Portland Meadows

Portland Meadows opened in Portland, Oregon in 1946 to an opening day crowd of over 10,000. The track made history as the first Thoroughbred track in the country to offer nighttime racing, thanks to a powerful lighting system designed by General Electric. Though racing has continued since its opening, Portland Meadows suffered severe damage in a 1948 flood and the grandstand was completely demolished in a fire in 1970. Magna Entertainment acquired the license in 2001, and The Stronach Group assumed ownership in 2011 after acquiring all Magna racing and gaming assets. The track is known for helping to launch the career of jockey Gary Stevens, who earning the leading rider title at Portland Meadows in 1981 and 1982.
