Trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. Off to a Fast Start at Delta Downs

May 3rd, 2017

The 2017 Quarter Horse racing season at Delta Downs is in its third week and trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. is already topping the standings at the Vinton, Louisiana racetrack.

The seven-time leading conditioner at Delta Downs has already won 12 races in the first two weeks of the meet. Last weekend was a busy one with trials for the first two futurities of the season. Roberts qualified two fillies for the $322,285 Louisiana Lassie Futurity (RG2) and another two colts for the $266,140 Louisiana Laddie Futurity (RG2). The finals will take place on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20.

Roberts, who was born in Louisiana, but trained for close to two decades in Texas, saddled his first racehorse 40 years ago. He and his staff, including his brother, Roy, oversee a barn of 50 runners, with another 25 on his farm. Hard work and a dedicated team of owners, jockeys and stable hands are key ingredients to his success on the racetrack.

Roberts was honored as Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association (LQHBA) champion trainer in 2016 and is already 11th on the AQHA national trainer list this year. The Delta Downs meet runs through July 8 and Roberts will be in pursuit of his eighth leading trainer title. He clinched his seventh last July on the final night of the meet, edging Michael Taylor by just one win.

He is one of many successful horsemen running in Louisiana. With four race meets solely dedicated to Quarter Horse racing, it is an excellent circuit to follow.
