Harlan’s Holiday Stakes Tops Saturday Racing Action at Gulfstream

Creator defeats Destin in the 2016 Belmont Stakes (Photo by Chelsea Durand/Coglianese Photos) The Gulfstream Park Championship Meet showcases top-notch racing all winter long, and the upcoming December 16th card—featuring five graded stakes races—is no exception. The first stakes on the card is the $100,000 Rampart Stakes (gr. III) at a mile for fillies and mares, in which the Gulfstream sensation Curlin’s Approval (7-for-10 at the track) will seek to rebound from a 13th-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup [...]

Diversify seeks second grade one in Clark Handicap

Held back from the Breeders’ Cup Classic despite winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park, Diversify gets his chance at a second grade one victory in the 1 1/8-mile Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs Nov. 24. Diversify had won six of his nine starts, many in New York-bred races, when he tackled graded stakes company for the first time in the 1 ¼-mile [...]

Seven stakes races highlight Breeders’ Cup undercards

Hard Aces wins the Tokyo City Cup at Santa Anita Park. Photo: Benoit Photo. Thirteen Breeders’ Cup races understandably take precedence at Del Mar Nov. 3-4, but punters shouldn’t ignore some excellent racing on the undercards. This is particularly the case on Friday, which features two graded races: the 1 ¾-mile Marathon (G2), and the five-furlong Senator Ken Maddy Stakes for fillies and mares. Hard Aces won a Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) early in his career [...]

Keen Ice Faces 3-Year-Olds in Jockey Club Gold Cup

Punters looking to play the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park Oct. 7 have one major question to ask: do they trust the form of two older horses well beaten by Gun Runner at their last starts, or do they trust two of the better 3-year-olds. Keen Ice may start favorite in the 1 ¼ mile test, which carries direct entry to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). A distant third-place finisher in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, Keen [...]

After Triple Crown 3 Year Old Division Predictions

The Triple Crown is in the books!  Creator nipped Destin by a nose at the wire to win the Belmont Stakes, the third and final jewel of the crown, on Saturday, June 11. Time to move on to Saratoga! Nobody could have expected this year's Triple Crown to match last year's. American Pharoah broke a 37 year Triple Crown drought. It was something that we may never see again the rest of our lives. This year was about good horses [...]

Kentucky Derby 11 through 15 in Point Standings

The 2016 Kentucky Derby is officially less than 2 weeks away. I'm almost done with my handicapping. I like to handicap the Derby well before the actual race, make my wagers as soon as I get to the racetrack, and then take my time figuring out the other races on which I'm betting. In this blog, I run down the Kentucky Derby entrants in point standings from 11 to 15. See below for my take on 5 more of the [...]

Kentucky Derby Power Rankings

What a bummer the 2016 Florida Derby turned out to be. It wasn't a bummer for everybody. The connections of Nyquist certainly didn't think it was a bummer after they took down a cool $1 million for winning the Florida Derby as a Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale Graduate. That bumped up Nyquist's earnings to a gargantuan $3,322,600. Nyquist will be the richest horse to ever start in the Kentucky Derby. But he's not at the top of my rankings. Mohaymen doesn't [...]

Derby Comp Shows Up for Mohaymen

It took a while but 2, actually 3, horses showed up this past weekend who could possibly challenge Mohaymen on the First Saturday in May. Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 was this past weekend. The final odds on Sunday had Mohaymen as a solid 7/2 choice. The two horses that really impressed over the weekend, Destin and Danzing Candy, are going off at 15 to 1 and 17 to 1 respectively. I suppose that those who made wagers in [...]
