As conference play gets into full swing, the strength of the Power Five leagues will begin to impact the weekly power rankings. Gonzaga had a terrific non-conference slate, but as other teams begin to rack up quality wins, they will lack a chance to garner any of their own until tournament time. As such, we have a new team atop our rankings, so let’s jump in and see who it is.
After Christmas comes the long lines at the mall to return that shirt that’s two sizes too small, or the sweater your great aunt was sure you’d love. And as we all make our exchanges, it’s time to reevaluate some teams we were buying at the beginning of the season as title contenders. Surely many Michigan State bettors are looking for the customer service counter, as the Spartans’ odds to win it all have dropped from second place at +1000 to +1600, just in the last week.
Wake Forest was one of the few pleasant surprises in an ACC season filled with disappointments, and as a result of the Deacons' success, they'll head to blustery New York to take on Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27.
Another top-ranked team suffered a loss to an unranked opponent. Following in the footsteps of Kentucky and Duke, the Louisville Cardinals are the third top-ranked squad to fall to a team without a number next to its name—although they are the only one in this group to lose to a Power Five team.
What a difference a week makes. Following Kentucky’s stunning upset defeat to Evansville last week, the Wildcats have fallen all the way out of our Power Rankings, after holding the top spot last week. In their place steps their bitter rival, Louisville, and they bring four pals from their conference in this week’s top 10. It’s still early in the season, but the ACC flavor in this week’s rankings is strong.
